Volunteers keep Carnarvon Afloat

Since Bill and Charles have been maintaining the rescue boat for the Carnarvon Volunteer Sea Rescue Group, the engine has never failed.

Both Bill and Charles are Life Members of the Sea Rescue Group. Between them they have been President, Skipper, Boat Maintainer, Crew, Radio Operator and Treasurer. As Life Members, both Bill and Charles have contributed significantly to the growth of the organisation since it first operated out of a back room at the local SES building.

When they are not busy with the Sea Rescue Group, Bill and Charles work as Plant Operators with Rio Tinto Minerals in Lake Macleod. Bill has been with Rio Tinto since 1974. He has been involved with the Sea Rescue Group for around 25 years. Charles has been working with Rio Tinto since 1980, and has been volunteering for around 15 years.

The Carnarvon Volunteer Sea Rescue Group is comprised of thirty volunteers who are committed to manning radio watches and attending sea rescues. Their 22-foot rescue boat and equipment also needs to be maintained on a weekly basis.

Rio Tinto also helps the Sea Rescue Group stay up and running through servicing life rafts and contributing funding.

For Bill and Charles, the greatest reward has been a sense of participating in the local community and being able to help people in need. The time they contribute as volunteers benefits the local community, and helps keep local waters safe.
