Tap into traditional art

main_yinjaa barni.jpg  Pilbara artists showcased their work in Perth The Pilbara came to Perth on colourful canvas during the 2008 Colours of our Country Aboriginal art exhibition.

The exhibition showcases the work of Aboriginal artists from Roebourne, Wickham and Karratha providing an opportunity to tell stories of childhood, country and culture to a large Perth audience.

Thirty-five Pilbara Aboriginal artists showcased 150 pieces of canvas, artefacts and textiles in the foyer of Perth’s Central Park building for this year’s exhibition. All of the work was for sale, with 100% of the proceeds going back to artists and art groups in the Pilbara.

Since the launch of the exhibition in 2006, more than $350,000 in sales has been returned direct to the artists, but the benefits reach beyond financial gain.

“This has helped give many of us confidence,” said featured Yindjibarndi artist Allery Sandy who had a piece gifted to the Art Gallery of WA for inclusion in the state Aboriginal collection.

“It is such a satisfying feeling to see all your hard work being displayed and enjoyed by people.”

“Art brings people together and can be enjoyed by every one of all ages. Our art groups are a great support for young people and it’s heartening to see young people take a strong interest in expressing stories and events that are important to them.”
