Change for Good

Rio Tinto has joined forces with key energy players in the fight against climate change by signing up to the WA Sustainable Energy Association (WA SEA).

The WA SEA supports business and government to develop and adopt sustainable energy technologies and practices.

Alongside businesses like Alinta, BP, Synergy and Solahart, corporate membership will see us contribute to the growth of sustainable energy practices in Western Australia.

The move comes as we enter the second year of a three-year work program to address the risks and opportunities from climate change.

“In 2008 we are closely examining the energy use of our Pilbara operations, improving our accountability and setting new targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” according to Regina Flugge from Rio Tinto’s Sustainable Development team.  We also continue to focus on reducing the greenhouse gas impact associated with the expansion of our operations in the Pilbara.

As well as delivering benefits to our business, the steps we're taking now to examine our energy use and improve efficiency is consistent with the Federal Government’s Energy Efficiency Opportunities legislation and will place us in good stead for the forthcoming emissions trading scheme.
