joined in the fun at the Kwinana Arts Centre

Balloons, painted faces, story telling and the mayhem of newborns crying, toddlers running around and young children laughing.

This sounds like the scene from a local day care centre, but it was actually the launch of Keys to Literacy - the first initiative implemented by The Smith Family since the Rio Tinto WA Future Fund and HIsmelt renewed their partnership with the organisation in April this year.

Keys to Literacy is a partnership between Kwinana community organisations, including The Smith Family, which provides a suite of literacy resources for parents and their children from birth to adolescence.

Through the new initiative, community groups with literacy programs in Kwinana are united under one banner, making it easier for parents to find a program to suit their child’s age and literacy needs.

It also means parents can begin reading with their children from the early months of life and support their reading right through to their teenage years.

By supporting Keys to Literacy, Rio Tinto WA Future Fund and HIsmelt are helping change the lives of hundreds of disadvantaged children by unlocking their reading potential.

In addition to Keys to Literacy, The Smith Family runs a number of other initiatives improving the educational opportunities for Western Australian children.

To help support these programs The Smith Family runs an annual Winter Appeal. To help with the Winter Appeal or for more information call The Smith Family on 1800 024 069 or visit www.thesmithfamily.com.au.
