A precious resource

main_hydration.jpg  "Drink More Water" was the key message of the project Did you know our body mass is 70% water?

That is why drinking enough water is an important part of staying healthy in our warm climate.

In October 2008, Rio Tinto employees and representatives from the Prime Health Group visited schools and Aboriginal groups in the Pilbara talk about why it is important to drink adequate water and the risks associated with dehydration.

“The community hydration project Drink More Water was rolled out to Rio Tinto’s inland and coastal communities, as part of a national Safe Work Australia initiative,” said Indigenous Liaison Superintendent Tracey Heimberger.

“Information was provided to school age students and clients of our local Aboriginal Medical Service using posters t-shirts and caps. Water bottles and fruit were distributed in addition to the programme resources”.

Local Ngarluma artist Jill Churnside provided an Aboriginal image of a water hole that was used to promote the message “Drink More Water”.

Rio Tinto contractors also got behind the project, with NRW, Carr Civil Contracting, Marnda Mia and ESS providing donations.

The programme has increased awareness of dehydration, and helped Pilbara communities understand that water is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.
