Rio Tinto in the Pilbara

Pilbara Iron

Dampier Salt

Expansion Projects

Rio Tinto operates iron ore, salt and expansion projects in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

We currently operate and maintain eleven iron ore mines, three shipping terminals and a 1,300 kilometre rail system in the Pilbara which delivers ore from the inland mines to the ports.

The eleven mines are: Paraburdoo, Eastern Range, Channar, West Angelas, Marandoo, Yandicoogina, Mount Tom Price, Brockman 2, Nammuldi, Mesa J and Hope Downs.

Servicing these mines are two shipping terminals - Parker Point and East Intercourse Island - located at Dampier Port and one shipping terminal at Cape Lambert (Port Walcott).

We operates two gas-fired thermal power stations in Dampier and Cape Lambert.  Plans are underway to decommision these stations and replace them with a new natural gas turbine power station, which will save the business approximately 25% in green house gases per year.

Rio Tinto  is active in the following Pilbara communities:

  • Dampier / Karratha
  • Pannawonica
  • Paraburdoo
  • Point Samson
  • Port Hedland
  • Roebourne
  • Tom Price
  • Wickham

  • Expansion of Hope Downs to 22 mt/a.
  • Pannawonica town upgrade
  • New mine developments at Brockman 4 and Mesa A.
