Sprint to the finish
08 March 2009

The economic downturn did little to dampen the spirits of the more than 2000 participants taking part in the largest adult triathlon event in WA. Clear blue skies and sunshine, with a strong breeze for the earlier competitors, made for perfect weather for the main and sprint events.
87 Rio Tinto employees participated in the main race, with all three members of each Rio Tinto team completing the 400 m swim, 10 km cycle and 4 km run in a relay format. The other 36 employee competitors participated in the sprint event, in teams of three, with each team member completing one element of the race. Quite a few of the Rio Tinto participants completed their first ever triathlon and were justifiably proud of themselves at the finish line.
Special mention goes to Prime Health who shared Rio Tinto's marquee and provided Rio Tinto competitors with a fantastic free post-race massage service. We're also very thankful to the Lions Club who provided some great post-race refreshments.
Employees were provided support for the event through Rio Tinto's Employees in the Community Team Rio Tinto initiative, which provides funds to assist team activities involving twenty or more employees.
