Pilbara performing arts program leaps into national spotlight

21 October 2009

The Michael Leslie Foundation for the Arts and Rio Tinto were recognised for an outstanding performance at the Australian Business Arts Foundation (ABaF) awards in Brisbane recently.

After success at the Western Australian state awards in September, Foundation principal Michael Leslie was confident of recognition on a national stage, based on the outcomes delivered over the last three years of working together.

“This award is recognition of Rio Tinto’s commitment to regional communities and I am very proud to be associated with a company that could see the benefits of this approach to building a healthy community.  The kids inspire us to all to keep working hard to grow the Foundation.”

The Foundation’s programmes provide artistic inspiration, skills and motivation to over 600 young people in the Pilbara on a weekly basis.

Through residences, workshops and performing arts productions, the Foundation seeks out opportunities for young people and their communities in the Pilbara to reach their potential through creative expression.

Participants regularly have access to playwrights, scriptwriters, actors, and dancers who mentor and support participants in telling stories that are locally important via the arts.

Rehearsals for a performance piece, which explores stories of life in the Roebourne region over the last 50 years is currently underway. Entitled “Three Trees’, for the first time the Foundation will provide performing opportunities for both children and adults, with the production being developed collaboratively with local aboriginal cultural organisations.

The ABaF awards celebrate best practise in partnering, volunteering and giving.

This award was Rio Tinto’s second AbaF award in three years, with Rio Tinto's Pilbara Aboriginal arts partnership with the Shire of Roebourne receiving the Qantaslink Regional Award in 2007.

Rio Tinto was also commended for our partnership with DADAA (Disability in the Arts, Disadvantage in the Arts, Australia), who had national success in partnership with the City of Swan and Midland Redevelopment Authority for “The Lost Generation” project.
