Careers right here!

What do you want to be when you grow up?
That was the question many students were asked at the Scitech Regional Science Awareness Festival in Bunbury on September 1 -2.
The festival was part of Scitech’s Kids Science State and aimed to expose local students to science used in their community, raise awareness of the careers available in science and technology and build the profile of science and technology in the wider community.
Rio Tinto, as a partner of the state-wide programme, was invited to attend along with other local south west employers, and took the opportunity to introduce students to the many processes of mining iron ore; discussing iron ore grading, activities undertaken from mine to mill and the difference between lumps and fines.
An added extra in our interactive Rio Tinto display was Graduate Metallurgist William Beattie from Vancouver, Canada. He shared his experiences with students, giving them an up close and personal look at his career, his tertiary study, and the graduate programme he has undertaken with Rio Tinto.
Previously, the Science Festival has been hosted by Geraldton and Karratha. In 2009 the festival will be hosted by Albany.
